Woman directors have been taking over Hollywood the last few years and 2018 shows no signs of slowing either. Here we highlight three of our favorites that have made a big impact on the industry:
1. Patty Jenkins – Wonder Woman (2017) – Jenkins set records as Wonder Woman became the highest grossing film directed by a woman, surpassing Mamma Mia! Jenkins has already signed on to direct the sequel to our favorite female superhero film.
2. Ava DuVernay – 13th (2016) – DuVernay has been making waves in Hollywood as a director for a while. 2014’s Selma earned her the title of being the first black female director to be nominated for a Golden Globe. 2016’s 13th, a daunting look into the American prison system, made waves with its Netflix debut and earned an acclaimed 97% on Rotten Tomatoes.
3. Angelina Jolie – First They Killed My Father (2017) – While a talented actress, Jolie has solidified herself as a talented director as well. Jolie’s movies usually have a strong political message, i.e. In the Land of Blood and Honey and Unbroken, and First They Killed My Father is no exception. It’s been said that the movie is her best work as a director yet, and has already won her some awards.
Big thanks to these women for help forging a path for other woman directors. It will be interesting to see what these women tackle next in the years ahead!
