Meet Julia, the newest addition to the Sesame Street show in over a decade. She is just like all the other characters, except she has autism. Julia’s addition to the show is part of Sesame Street’s autism-related “See Amazing In All Children” campaign. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that as many as one in 68 U.S. children have autism. It is also reported from CNN that with the introduction of Julia, Sesame Street “hopes to give viewers with autism and their families a character to identify with.”
During an interview on 60 Minutes, writer Christine Ferraro told the news show, “The big discussion right at the start was, ‘How do we do this? How do we talk about autism?’” The goal is to bring about more awareness about autism, and the effects that it has on children. Many people don’t understand what the life of an autistic child is like, and why they behave in they’re manner. Hopefully from watching the show, society will have a better view on how to treat those with autistic needs.
